# Free up space on a MacBook

Start from the free-space readout, preview a Smart Clean, and leave removals in the Trash until you know the Mac still works.

A MacBook runs out of space in a specific way: developer caches, old project folders, and a Storage window whose System Data category is a bucket rather than a folder. [Disk Housekeeper](https://macmelon.com/apps/disk-housekeeper) is built for that situation. It shows free space in the menu bar, and Smart Clean can gather developer caches (npm, Gradle, Cargo, Xcode DerivedData) and node\_modules.

This page is the short path. The longer map is [How to free up disk space on a Mac](https://macmelon.com/guides/how-to-free-up-disk-space-on-a-mac). Nothing here asks you to delete a file you have not seen.

## Steps

1. ### Read the menu bar first

The free-space readout is the baseline. Write it down if you want to compare later. Do not expect the number to match the Storage window's categories one-for-one. [Purgeable space](https://macmelon.com/glossary/purgeable-space) and [System Data](https://macmelon.com/glossary/system-data) are why.

2. ### Open Smart Clean and read the preview

Look for caches and node\_modules you recognize. Leave anything that belongs to a project you will open today. The preview is mandatory: Disk Housekeeper always shows it before a clean.

3. ### Let removals go to the Trash

That is the default. Space is not fully returned until the Trash is emptied, which is a good reason to wait. Open one project and confirm it still builds or installs before you empty anything.

4. ### Turn on a low-space alert

The alert is a nudge when free space is tight. It does not run a clean by itself. The [savings history](https://macmelon.com/glossary/savings-history) is where you later read what this clean actually moved.

## Before you start

- Do not empty the Trash in the same minute as the clean. Confirm a project you depend on still opens.
- APFS snapshots can hold space that a cache clean does not touch. Disk Housekeeper does not describe snapshot deletion. See [APFS snapshot](https://macmelon.com/glossary/apfs-snapshot).

## Questions

Why did Storage barely move?

Files in the Trash still occupy space, and purgeable space is not the same thing as free space. Check the Trash, then the savings history, before you run a second clean.

Is there a published amount this will save?

No. The history in the app is the record for your Mac. This site does not print a sample gigabyte figure.
